The concept of interlocking paving dates well over 2000 years, back to the Roman Empire.  The Romans developed a simple way of building roads, some of which are still in use today.

The roads were constructed with a well compacted base layer of lime and gravel, which was covered with a tight fitting stone.  This produced and excellent and economical road that was virtually maintenance free in all weather conditions.

This concept has been developed into the more modern version - interlocking concrete pavers.

The definition of "interlock" is 'to connect so that motion of any part is constrained by another'.
Just some of the advantages to interlocking paving are:

        * Make a superior integrated system for residential and commercial vehicle requirements
        * Requires minimal maintance when installed correctly
        * No expansion joints required
        * Resistant to spilled fuel and oil
        * Easy to repair and/or replace
        * Long design life
        * Interlocking pavers do not crack like asphalt or concrete
        * Resists deterioration from weather extremes

Interlocking pavers are most commonly made from cement or concrete.  They connect together through the use of a sand joint and can be used for most applications.  The most common being:

        * Carparks
        * Driveways
        * Roadways
        * Freight Yards
        * Loading Docks
        * Airport pavements
        * Intersections
        * Speedhumps

Interlocking pavers are designed with ridges on the wall of the paver.  This is so that when sand is placed between the pavers, they do not move - therefore interlocking.
Interlocking ensures a uniform and secure surface area that distributes weight and can sustain frequent and heavy traffic loads, whilst still being slightly moveable to resist cracking due to weather extremes or earth movements.  Because interlocking paving is kept in place without the use of mortar, they are also easy to replace.

Interlocking paving is installed by hand.  However, for large areas, it is usually machine-installed.
